My Life Working at Home

I have been working for myself for a long time now, and I think it was one of the best decisions of my life. There is definitely something wonderful about setting your hours and being your own boss.

But the catch is that you still need to get the work done, and from that perspective, I can sometimes struggle. The work that I am doing today is a wonderful example of work that I do. I have been selecting some Quebec photos for a text book contract that I am working on. Sure, it is fun, but sometimes you get sick of looking at pictures of barns, right?

Needless to say, I wouldnt be able to have the freedom that I do without my IBM netbook. Having a laptop has allowed me the freedom of not being tied to a desk which sure beats the corporate world. This means that I can go out for a coffee to work, sit at the beach, or even make it up to the mountains to work (and ski too). I really can’t imagine being tied to a desk job again in my life since having all this freedom can be a little addicting.

But it has been a long road to get to this point. I had to spend many years working up the corporate ladder, and putting in long hours. The worst part was that my family life suffered because of my work, and to this day my children still haven’t forgiven me. But it was those sacrifices that I made along the way that has allowed me to do something that I finally love.

I am so happy that I don’t have to do the same thing every day when I wake up. Some days I might be doing something a little more artistic, the next I might be doing something more analytical – but never the same thing on more than one day. I love facing new challenges each and every day. Since my job is the way it is, I would think that it should never be boring.

I don’t think that I will ever quit cold turkey when I retire. I mean, if I can have an income without having to work fulltime and yet I can still make a good income to do the things I love, why would I quit? I know many people my age retire, then go and find another part time job at a lower wage that just doesnt make sense. I could never be that kind of person.

So, I should get back to work and pick out these pictures. Maybe I will quit work early today and go to a movie. Having the freedom to choose my own hours rocks!
