The Powerful Laws of Persuasion

A German study has demonstrated that blonde women performed worse in IQ style tests if they had first been exposed to ‘all blondes are dumb’ style jokes before taking the tests. The study used around 80 women with various hair colors and appeared to show how the suggestion that blondes were less bright adversely affected their confidence.

Whether we want to be or not, humans are highly suggestible creatures. We are all capable of thinking and reasoning but doing so uses up valuable energy. So if we can take a short cut by following a prompt provided by someone else we will. Understanding the laws of persuasion is all about human psychology.

Effective and winning sales people are experts in the power of persuasion. When out shopping for clothes you’ve probably run into the sales person who tells you that you look great in everything you try on, just to get a sale. It’s only when you get home and reflect on your purchase that you realize that you were persuaded to part with your cash by the flattery of the sales person.

Commonly used persuasion techniques that we have all encountered include using someones name in a friendly manner. We’ve all encountered the overly friendly sales person who suddenly becomes your new best friend when they have your christian name.

A commonly employed technique is to use the same words, language and accent as the person you are trying to persuade. Adopting the same accent and using the same vocabulary is a common persuasion technique.

Another technique used in persuasion is to always use very positive language and motivating, encouraging words. Our subconscious is easily influenced by these suggestion techniques.

Some knowledge of persuasion techniques can be useful to everybody. These techniques can be very useful to parents. Techniques like these can be effectively used in the workplace.
